Enhanced LRC Maker: Word-Level Karaoke Lyrics from Your Audio

Quick Answer

An enhanced LRC maker gives every word its own timestamp so a player can light up the lyrics word by word, karaoke style, rather than a whole line at once. A tap-to-sync LRC maker can't do this because nobody can tap 300 words in time. An AI maker can. It finds the start of each word in the vocal track.

EasyLRC does it from an MP3 in about 10 to 20 seconds. You upload and the editor opens in Enhanced mode with every word marked on the waveform. The preview is free. Dragging words and exporting the Enhanced LRC file are on paid plans from $5 a month.

What Enhanced LRC Looks Like

Plain LRC has one timestamp per line in square brackets. Enhanced LRC keeps that and adds a timestamp per word in angle brackets, on the same mm:ss.xx clock.

[00:12.40]<00:12.40>I <00:12.71>left <00:12.95>the <00:13.20>porch <00:13.62>light <00:13.98>on <00:14.30>for <00:14.55>you
[00:16.85]<00:16.85>Long <00:17.30>after <00:17.80>you <00:18.05>were <00:18.40>gone

A player that understands the angle brackets highlights porch at 13.62 and light at 13.98. One that doesn't just reads the line timestamp and shows the line. Some strip the word tags out and some print them as text, more on that below.

You'll also see it called ELRC or the A2 extension. Same thing. The enhanced LRC format examples post has more samples including multi-singer lines.

Why a Plain LRC Maker Can't Produce It

Most LRC makers work the same way. You paste the lyrics, press play and hit a key when each line starts, and the app writes the timestamp. For lines that's fine. A song has maybe 40 to 80 of them and you get a second or two of warning before each one.

Words are harder. A 3 minute pop song has 300 to 500 words. In a fast verse they come 4 or 5 a second. Your reaction time is around 200 ms on a good day, so by the time you've tapped one word the next two are gone. People do try. They slow playback to half speed, tap, then double the timestamps. That takes an hour per song and still lands late.

So tap-to-sync editors stop at the line level. In most of them the "enhanced" option is a text box where you type the angle-bracket times yourself, which is the hour-per-song method again with a nicer font.

How an AI Maker Times Each Word From the Vocals

A speech model doesn't react to the vocal. It reads the whole waveform and works out where each word starts and stops. The word boundaries come out of the same process that produces the transcript.

Roughly it goes like this. The audio gets split into short frames and the model labels each frame as part of a word or as silence. Runs of frames with the same label become words with a start and end time. The line timestamp is the first word's start and the angle bracket tags are each word's start. Nobody taps anything.

Accuracy is tightest on clear lead vocals. Sung words stretch, so where a long held note "starts" is a judgment call and you might pull it a touch earlier than the model did. Backing vocals and ad-libs sometimes get stamped as their own words. Both take seconds to fix on a waveform, which beats typing 400 timestamps.

How to Make One With the EasyLRC Enhanced LRC Maker

  1. Go to the upload page and sign in with Google. No card.
  2. Upload the track. MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and Opus are all fine. MP4 or MOV if you only have the video. FLAC on paid plans.
  3. Wait 10 to 20 seconds for a normal length song.
  4. The editor opens in Enhanced mode. Every word has its own marker on the waveform.
  5. Play it back. If a word lights up late, drag its marker to the transient (word editing needs a paid plan, the free plan is preview only). Vowels on held notes are usually the ones to pull earlier. If the model split or merged a word, fix the text.
  6. Export as Enhanced LRC. Or ASS, TTML, SRT or WebVTT from the same timing if you're not targeting an LRC player.

The word-level preview is free on any plan so you can see what it got before you pay. Editing words and exporting the Enhanced LRC file are on paid plans from $5 a month. Plain line-level LRC export stays free within the 5 minute monthly allowance.

It works in 99+ languages. For languages written without spaces like Japanese or Chinese, the word boundaries follow the transcript's segmentation. So check the splits land where a singer would put them.

Which Players Highlight Word by Word

Support is narrower than for plain LRC. Here's what we could find in each project's docs, forum or on Wikipedia.

PlayerWord-by-word from Enhanced LRCNotes
Symfonium (Android)YesReads the angle-bracket tags and moves the highlight at each word's start. Also accepts syllable tags with explicit end times, which its developer recommends for syllable-style highlighting. Supports v1: v2: and bg: voice markers on a line.
Medoly (Android)ListedWikipedia lists it as supporting Enhanced LRC. Medoly's own store page only says .lrc, so test it.
KaraFun PlayerListedWikipedia says it displays simple and enhanced .lrc. KaraFun's own help page just says .lrc, and the player is no longer updated.
Poweramp (Android)NoLine-level only. A staff reply on the Poweramp forum says the per-word tags are dropped and not shown. The file still works as plain LRC.
MusixmatchOwn data onlyHighlights every word as it's sung but from its own catalog. Word-by-word is free with a cap and Premium removes the cap. It won't load your .lrc.
QQ Music, KugouOwn formatsBoth do word-by-word with QRC and KRC files, which store a start and duration per word. That isn't Enhanced LRC.

If your player isn't listed, test it. Drop an enhanced file in and watch one line. Words lighting up one by one means it works. If the whole line highlights at once the player ignored the tags, and that's harmless. But if you see <00:12.71> printed as text the player choked on them, so give it plain LRC.

The enhanced LRC word-level timing guide goes into each one.

Alternatives: ASS Karaoke Tags and TTML Word Spans

Enhanced LRC is the simplest word-level format. It isn't the only one though. If you're targeting a video or a web player you might want one of these. Both can carry word timing.

ASS. The subtitle format Aegisub and most anime fansubs use. Karaoke is built in. Each word gets a {\k} tag with its duration in centiseconds and the renderer fills the text from left to right.

Dialogue: 0,0:00:12.40,0:00:15.10,Default,,0,0,0,,{\k31}I {\k24}left {\k25}the {\k42}porch {\k36}light {\k32}on {\k25}for {\k55}you

Use this for a lyric video or anything that plays through a video player with libass. The free LRC to ASS tool converts line timing only, so the {\k} tags are something you add in Aegisub or with a karaoke script.

TTML is XML timed text. Each word becomes a <span> with its own begin time inside a <p> for the line. Produce this if a distributor or a web player asks for timed text and not a lyrics file. The free LRC to TTML tool writes one <p> per line and drops the word tags. Word-level TTML needs a tool that writes spans.

EasyLRC exports all of these formats from one timing pass, so there's only one review. Right now the ASS and TTML exports are line-level. The word timing goes out as Enhanced LRC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an enhanced LRC maker

It's a tool that puts a timestamp on every word of an LRC file instead of only on each line. The output uses angle-bracket tags like <00:12.71> inside each line so a compatible player can highlight one word at a time. EasyLRC does this by analysing the vocal track rather than by tapping.

Can I make an enhanced LRC file for free

You can generate and preview the word-level timing for free on EasyLRC within the 5 minute monthly allowance. Exporting the Enhanced LRC file needs a paid plan, from $5 a month. Plain line-level LRC export is free.

Will an enhanced LRC file break players that don't support it

Usually not. Most players that read LRC ignore the angle-bracket tags and show the line as normal, Poweramp included. A few older players print the tags as text. If yours does, export plain LRC for it.

Which music players show word-by-word lyrics from an LRC file

Symfonium on Android reads Enhanced LRC and highlights word by word. Medoly and KaraFun Player are listed as supporting it too, though only on Wikipedia, so test them. Poweramp drops the word tags and highlights by line. Musixmatch does word-by-word from its own catalog. QQ Music and Kugou use their own formats (QRC and KRC) instead of a file you supply.

Is enhanced LRC the same as karaoke LRC

People use the terms interchangeably. Enhanced LRC is the file format with per-word timestamps and karaoke is what the player does with it. For a video or a karaoke screen the ASS format with {\k} tags has wider support. EasyLRC's ASS export is line-level for now, so the word fill is something you add in Aegisub.
